It was quite a sight. We have wave after wave of snows dropping into the decoys. Thor sat next to me in his mut hut and watched the birds drop all around us and trying to land in our face. He held tight in his blind and after all the shooting stopped 20 min later I let him do his job. There were dead birds everywhere. I no'ed him off the dead birds inteh decoys and sent him on the long ones that were dropping 50-300 yards outside the spread.

Quick hunt!
Made our way putting out (and picking up) a couple thousand pieces for light geese vitually every open season day for what got to be too many years, but we almost never shot so many that quickly. Must have been pretty wild! Our MO was to send the dogs for long birds quickly to keep them from running off or becoming hawk feed and scramble for most of what was close ourselves when the dogs were working. Would then scatter dead birds close to each hunter to help track numbers/limits. Sounds like most everything must have taken the bait on your hunt, but we usually tolled many, many more that too soon saw us for what we were than fell all the way for it. And the best of my dogs at the game, Bud, developed an uncanny knack for knowing which birds or flights of them would buy it and which would not. Would be times I'd think we could heat the oven, and he'd be licking his privates, perhaps just to pass the time until a more promising bunch came along, because those would sure as sunrise push off. Other times I might not think a flight worth hollering at until I'd see him locked on them. On those that would toll, he'd gather his feet under him like a stalking lion, and the closer they'd get, the lower Bud's chin would get between his front paws. Really miss Bud, and can offer my current coyote no higher praise than that he sometimes brings Bud to mind. Anyway... I'm thinkin' that if you did that day after day, you'd soon be mighty glad Thor is a big solid fellow! ______________________________________________________________________________________________ If you think I'm wrong, you might be right. (And to see just how confused I really am, join us in my online blind at: Rick's 2009-2010 season log) |

thanks guys
Moose we have a ton of snows here. I think they said 1.5 million on the atlantic flyway this year. Starting next week unplugged guns a e callers and they extended the season until april. Mike you should have gotten a hold of me we could have went out and shot something. Rick alot of times I do just watch the dog it seems like sometimes he sees the birds alot farther then I can. I sure am glad thor is such a big dog he has went on a ton of retrieves these last couple weeks that were 250 to 400 yards for geese. These were on land and water. Craig that white suit I have on under the shirt keep geeting wind in it and blowing up like state puff So I put the white shrt on to keep my suit from getting caught in my gun. It was cold as shit that day. Them white devils sure are a pain on the butt to hunt. You spend more time scouting then you do hunting them . |
