I hunt upland birds (primarily pheasants) exclusively with my Chessies. I do not hunt waterfowl. The geese have moved into a cut cornfield in the field next to my house...there have been anywhere from 50 to 500 or more there at times. The field is just across the fence from my dog runs. When I take the dogs out to exercise them, the geese pay no attention to them or me whatsoever. We will have geese fly so low over our heads you could hit them with a rock. If we walk through the field where they are feeding they will not leave....they might get up and set down 50 yards away, but mostly they just honk at us. The dogs will but the run on them, of course, if I let them but they just stay out of reach of the dogs.

So, my question is......is this how geese act in the fall during hunting season? Based on the ones I see around here, there would certainly be no need to use camoflauge or to hide in a blind!

Walk towards them with a shotgun and see how they respond. My experience is that geese are quick to distinguish between "a man" and "a man with gun". They probably haven't been hunted for a couple of months and may have their guard down a bit too.

Why not give goose hunting a try next season and see for yourself?

I swear I think the critters can read when hunting season starts and ends and what ground is posted, but Tatonka if you need any help with your goose problem we would love to bring our cheesies up to Chinook and help you and your cbrs out to shrink the goose population in your corn field.

Ha!!! Ya, I figured geese know when hunting season is open like most critters do. Oddly enough, we have a lot of geese here that nest in the spring but not all that many any more in the fall.
