I was hunting on Egg Island, NJ with 2 friends and one 9 year old CBR named Buckshot.
We were set up off a point on the beach that was 40 yards off the Delaware Bay, Got it? We would have the Snow Geese come in behind us from the marsh on the way to the beach to get sand for there gullet. Then we would have them come back the same way. We were far enough away that they would "forget" that they were shot at on the way over. Buckshot is a retrieving dog and that is it. Obedience is kinda out of the question. Let's put it this way, if he felt like obeying he would. He had to be tied to the bushes so he would not run around. That was until the birds started working. Then Buckshot was as still as a rock, like a statue. Nothing moved but his eyes. And those were trained on the Snow Geese working our spread. He was unbelievable at this. We had one small flock come on in, so we popped up from behind the natural blind and made our shot. I got one on the far right. And Ray dropped one and Bob the owner of Buckshot nailed another one. Buckshot was perfect out and back. Here's were it gets neat. The dog runs back out after the 3rd Snow Goose was in hand. Bob starts to call to him and the dog was not responding at all. Bob was saying that "this is why I tie him up he is a hard headed Chesapeake Bay," Just as soon as he got the Y out in Bay, Buckshot found what he was looking for, a 4th bird went down. No one SAW it but Buckshot....! Who would have thunk it. As a kid, I started to hunt waterfowl in the 70's. I would have bet $$$ that there were only 3 birds down.... !! I am not kidding. We just stood there asking who shot the 4th bird. No one knows who shot it and Buckshot is not talking. We ended up with 15 Snow Geese that day.
