....what is the narrowest across that can be used well? I have about 30yd W x 70yd L rectangular piece of water to work with. Confused

That is OK in my opinion. Where my dog trains he has access to just a little longer channel. However I think you can keep everything right in front of you and maintain control with a small area provided the water is deep enough. I think it's better to have a close area to work with at first then as the dog learns you can increase to larger ponds for your work.
