For all you new puppy owners and young dog trainers this older book (published in 1988) has a lot of wonderful information for working with young retrievers. The basics are here with a good section on personalities, early marking and other drills.

The book is written by several old friends of mine in the Ft. Collins, CO. area and I was training with Cherylon Loveland in Wellington on a regular basis in the 1980's when the book was written. Claire Rutherford is a published author ("How to Raise A Puppy You Can Live With"), graduate of Colorado State University with degrees in animal science and English. She was also pretty good field trainer with All Age Labradors at that time. Her husband is retired from the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Cherylon has been training retrievers professionally since the early 70's, is a Rex Carr disciple and has been associated with many well known field trial trainers such as Judy Aycock, Danny Farmer, Jim Swan and others. She has been a "stay at home" trainer and does not run the field trial circuit. A few years ago, she had 3 dogs competing in the National Amateur in McCall, Idaho that were trained at her kennel.

The book is available at Lion Country Supply and for $11.95 is a still a good read.

Your welcome Mike.

Maybe when you have finished the Dave Rorem and Rex Carr DVD's you could give us a review. I too, have thought of purhasing them and would like to know what you think.

Hope all is well with you and your Peakes.

this book should be a good start for me. I am getting my new pup soon. Any advice on what food I should feed him? Do you think I would be a pest if I asked the breeder what they use? I want to give him the best start to what I hope will be a long and happy life. I am looking forward to having a chessie in my house again! Big Grin

I noticed this thread on RTF this morning and found it interesting. An updated version of her original work would be worthwhile to have.
