I dont know if this is the board for this question but I figured if it isnt, someone would direct me..can anyone tell me where I can get some information as to exactly what are the various tests that comprise all the different Field Trials..ie, I know a Derby is usually only marks, either doubles or triples..ok..but what's an all open, an amateur and all the other ones..
sorry..I'm more with the Hunt Test crowd than the Field Trial Crowd.

thanks for your time..

Marc

Marc, Sorry I cannot answer your question - I am "clue-less" on both HT/FT. However, if you still have questions after viewing Kent's links, post a question on the main chat board (you'll get more views, esp from those who participate in
Field Trials.) Question: I saw the pic (avatar) and am currious about your chessie. Sleeping on his (?- bad eye-sight) back. Does he play on his back too (roll alot)? My chessie, Chelsea (my avatar), is because that is how she is trained to play - my wife is paralysed and Chelsea cannot run about and as a Service Dog is taught to play beside the wheelchair.
I love his pic; unusual to see a cbr sleeping that way. As a 'newbie' myself to this forum, I'd like to welcome you.
You will find it very helpful. What is your chessie's name & age? Hunt with him? (see you're from up north - alot posting here are). Charlie

thanks for the help gentleman..
Charlie, Theo ( short for Theodora) used to roll around on her back on the ceramic floor all the time as a pup.I've got videos of her chasing her tail while lying on her back when she was about 4 months old..too funny. She's from one of Mike Coutu's litters.
Father is Crackshot Ben There Done That and mom is Mike's Sugar.. She was supposed to be a HE ( ( named THEODORE), but turned out that the female was better suited for my needs.
I wont really hunt her this fall. I'll bring her along but I'll let the other guys shoot while I make sure she doesnt break.

And Kent..as far as my trainer goes, he just likes yanking my chain a bit. He's a great guy really knows his stuff, but he is a lab guy..
Mario Beauregard( who knows my trainer) told me that deep down inside my trainer secretly has always wanted to train a chessie but wont admit to it in front of all his lab buddies Smile

I'm indeed from ''up north'' living just outside of Montreal. I've already discovered a whole lot of valuable information on the site and I'm looking forward to being able to contribute at some point. Thanks for the welcome!

Marc

Marc, Thanks for the info. Theodora is a good-looking chessie (atleast her belly, ha-ha). I've seen posted somewhere here info on linking pics & videos through 'photobucket' - Love to see her rolling/playing. Does she 'bark' while rolling & playing? Reason asking, Chelsea ONLY barks when RA-RAing (what we call her play). She'll never bark anyother time, someone at door, stranger, etc. Occasionally at another dog if it barks at her.
Hope her training works out for you. Kent's guidance on training is spot-on; he has the years of experience with chessies.
I'll offer this, if a Chessie is not properly trained the first time, don't expect it to 'take hold' the second time - with a chessie, its usually a now-or-never approach. We are just looking out for your interests & Theodora's. Charlie

Kent, Charlie
Have no fear, I see her every week and I have a chance to see the progress. The trainer knows her well by now and knows he cant rush things.
He is the first one tho say that she's an incredible dog with immnense potential and I've had other people in the club sya they've rarely seen a young dog with such great marking abilities. Where he knows he has to take it slow is on the obediance side of things. She has this little tendency of ''blowing you off'' ( that's canadian for " giving you the finger")
when told HERE, but the colar conditionning is helping greatly with that.
As for the rest, well, she was with me all weekend and she's really matured and calmed down. She still takes a running leep into the pool the minute I tell her it's ok and will just swimm around for the heck of it for a 20 minutes or so.

This trainer had a lab that was GMH and has another one that's on her 8th leg towards being GMH. He's a retired firefighter and has all the time in the world for Theo. I have all the confidence in the world that he has her best interest at heart. She is there to get her Basics 1 and 2 done because as a novice trainer I dont have the capacities to know what to do WHEN things go wrong. Facing a roadblock is one thing, knowing how to get around it or how to forge your way through it is a totaly different thing. Once the Base will be done, I'll be working on the rest of the training program along with him.

I'll be sticking to the Hunt Test thing as the biggest problems we face here in Quebec is that there are no trainng fields where you could train for Field Trial and of course, winter kinda screws things up as well. So you have to send your dog south if you want to be able to be competitive. I neither have the financial means nor the desire to have Theo gone for 6 months of the year..

I'll keep you guys posted in as the training evolves. Thanks for your concern. It's greatly appreciated.

Charlie, Theo didnt bark when she did the roll on her back break dance thing..she would ''moan'' I'll try and find the video and post it.

Marc
