I sent a PM to Moscowitz yesterday, but I thought I would throw this out for discussion. I've got a pup that should be running in the specialty derby next year. I have another that I am training myself. My wife and I will be taking our vacation and attending the trial this year.

My questions are numerous so bare with me. I would like to run one of my pups in the derby. I realize I would have to change my training program to a field trial format. Would the specialty be a good trial for a first timer. Is it highly competitive or are there people like myself with little to no trial experience. I will be up there watching one of my dogs and would like to run another myself. Are the marks in the derby about the same as they are in any trial. Tanks for any advice or suggestions. Greg

Greg somehow I did not get your PM. Sorry! I say go for it. The specialty I have found to be very friendly though I'm never a threat to anyone. I have run Derby in all breed field trials and they were very competitive and hope the chessie Derby is competitive. But that doesn't mean you should not run it. Train for it and run it. The more chessies running the more successful the speicialty becomes. That is great you are coming. The area is big. LIKE TEXAS.

First remember you can bring your dog to the line on lead. My recommendation is do that. Line your dog up with memory bird (spinal alignment) then unsnap choker. Don't pull it over his head because he will then have to re focus. Do you understand.

Next train your dog to look out. If you use live flyers shoot them as long bird in training so that they become very interested in that long bird. Just my opinion. Train with white coats so he gets use to looking for the white coats. Hope this helps so far.

Greg,
Speciality Derbies are a great place to take your first plunge. The entry is usually small and most times the judges try to carry as many dogs as possible.
You should try to get with some FT people to get you more so than your dogs accustomed to the rules and procedures.
Yes it is competitive, you want your marks to be better than everyone else. You don't need to be perfect just better.

Good luck, I look forward to seeing you there.

Tim

Never been to Maine, might be an interesting trip...What is the date? Probably wait until 2010...It should be a little closer to the West Coast again? Maybe have a derby dog then too....

Mike I should be able to run Thor in the Q and Gracie in the Derby but I have to make sure I can afford that trip.

Or if Tim wants to take them and run them. Smile

Joyce I have trained with Tim a couple of times and have thrown some marks for Tanner. When I heard Tim ws getting Tanner from you I was anxious to see him because of all the good things I have heard about your dogs.

Tim when this weather breaks I will be calling you for your training schedule.

Mike I will love to make the trip I just have to make sure I can afford to go.

Is it Pittsville Maine or Mass.?
