Very cute lil babies! I am intrigued by the Ash color, have never seen it in person yet so hard to totally visualize it, its seems like pictures don't tend to always show it well? Some pics it looked faded brown and others more of a weim color? is weim color close?

On another topic, what is with all these boys everywhere???

Puff had two like Enter in her most recent litter Big Grin

Lisa, the ash color has always been in the breed according to its early history. I'm no genetics expert (but I have had a few ash pups over the years!) but from what I have been told the ash comes from a recessive dilution gene that has to be present on both sides of the pedigree to express. It also can dilute deadgrass into the almost white light deadgrass shade you occasionally see. I think one of Sterling's pups is going to be that very light deadgrass shade.

And this is what the ash looks like on adults and yes, it can be hard to photograph because it does take on the appearance of whatever background you have in a photo. It is similiar to the weim. color, but I put my young ash girl Panda (that's her on the right) next to a Weim. one day and though the colors are similiar, the coat texture is just so different it's hard to compare!
This is the family of the litter I just posted. Grandma Puffin is the red brown in the middle with the purple collar. Sterling is one of ony 3 Puffin daughters (most of her pups in her 3 litters have been male). Her other two daughters are the brown bitch on the left and the sedge pup. The big buckethead ash male with the red collar is a Puffin son, littermate to Sterling.

We have a similar (same?) gene in Tollers, called Buff, it is a simple recessive. It is a DQ in Tollers. Buff on a lighter orange dog can look almost a silvery weimaraner color, while buff on a dark red dog can be difficult to detect sometimes without a really good close look - a true red or orange will have a brightness, a glow to it, while a dark red buff has a faded red without the coppery glow, it will have a bit of ashiness to it. A buff is quite obvious at birth, they usually look pretty silvery then even though many will darken up a bit as they mature (as Tollers in general tend to do). Here is a page showing Buff vs regular orange and red Tollers: Buff Tollers

UC Davis came out with a test for Buff in Tollers this year....I am curious if this would work on Chessies? Chessies are one of the many breeds theorized to be used in the development of Tollers, this could even explain where our Buff came from, assuming it is the same gene of course.

Anyone want to spend $45 and test an Ash for the hell of it? lol

Great colorings, I love it! My Sima was a lighter shade of brown, not quite an ash but her head had a very "silvery" look to it when the sun slightly bleached her out....some said her head looked like a weimerimer (however you spell, to lazy to look it up)

Great looking pups! Paul

Lisa (Tollwest),

First Bandit, a Chuck x Sassie Martin Pinder pup, Now a "puffie" from Julie. Soon you will have a more Chessies than Tollers in your "menagerie". Think we're converting someone to 'brown dogs'!! tehehe.

Bet this is a great Christmas for you!! Just tell your husband you want 4 more chessies by New Years eve.(he'll love that).
Seeing all the pup's pictures and having to wait must be 'killing you'. Congrats on expanding your crew. Best Regards,
Charlie

Great looking pups!! Every time I look at pictures of new litters I want to keep one for myself. I kind of have my hands full with my own young pups though (8 and 15 months).

I am not replacing the Tollers with Chessies, just adding to the pack. Well, sorta.... even with incoming Chessies my total dog number is going down, I have two 8 mo Toller girls I ran on that I have decided to place, and an adult girl I rescued back that I will be placing soon, plus 6 pups heading to new homes in 3 weeks. So really, that is 9 Tollers leaving and only 2 Chessies replacing them LOL Big Grin plus another 3 Tollers will be leaving over next year (1 back to co-owner, 1 to another breeder, and 1 to a 'retirement home') so do you think I will have to be adding another Chessie then when those 3 go? Wink

LOL by now I don't think it would really even phase him. He admitted defeat long ago, he knows if he says no I will do it anyway. I am as stubborn as a chessie! But when he met me I had 6 dogs plus a litter of pups, so he knew what he was getting into. He shoulda ran while he still had the chance Wink ANYWAY, Bandit is HIS puppy, and I figured if he gets his puppy, then I should get a puppy too, right?

Oh, its killing me all right! I am not good at waiting! But only 2 more sleeps before Bandit is here! And 1 more month for Cirrus! My Tollers are buying her for me for Christmas...

I did get to play with a very cute 6.5 month old brown Chessie puppy today! He is boarding at the kennel I work at.
