Hey Folks
Just came bakc from the Hunt Test In Maryland and found a tick in my bed (??) and was wondering. After the test Saturday I went out in a field to air Theo out and make her run a bit. When I got back into the car, I felt something crawling on my leg and picked a tick off. Got back home Sunday, unpacked and this morning my wife says.I feel like i have a bug crawling on me. Looked around and found a tick. Figured the dog must have some. I looked her over, didnt see any. Is there a comb to use to see if any are left or is it just by visual and running your hands through her coat. what else do I look for? thanks Marc |

We live in the Blue Ridge Mountains for Southwest Virginia - Tick Central! I would do everything Kent advises plus when I dress in the morning before I put on clothes I spray with an organic tick spray! After I dress, I also give the clothes a spray!
We use Frontline Plus on the dogs and usually about every 3 weeks in the summer rather than 4 weeks. They are in the water most every day. We also have the dogs get Lyme shots. Most of the dogs in our training group don't get Lyme shots (the vets disagree on the vaccine). Those dogs have all had Lyme and are on meds most of the time. We've been using the Lyme vaccine for probably 12 years on various dogs my dogs are Lyme free. My husband has had Lyme! They use to make a vaccine for humans, but quit. Pat Puwal |

We dont have ticks or Lyme disease in Quebec. ( for now). I picked this one up in Maryland. I had all my clothes washed and am checking Theo over pretty good. Havent found anything on her. Do they scratch excessively if they got bit?

Like Pat I also live in Tick Central in the Blue Ridge though I'm a few hours north of her. Ticks are horrible anywhere in the Mid Atlantic states especially at this time of year.
The good news is I am guessing your trainer Chris Locke probably had Theo on Frontline Plus which works pretty well on ticks for about 3 weeks or so. The bad news is while ticks won't attach to her, they WILL attach to you and your wife and your juicy non-frontlined flesh!! LOL. I wish they made a Frontline for humans but so far they don't. You too can get Lyme disease but they have to be attached for over 24 hours. Just check yourself vigilantly; check her too because I notice this year on my dogs who get FP monthly that they are getting ticks during the last week. So what I'm saying is ticks that got on Theo were probably repelled by the FP but since you didn't have any on you they would crawl off her and onto you or in your bedding/clothes lying in wait. They can live a long time waiting for a host.... If you find one on yourselves or the dog or in your bedding or clothes, burn it or put it in nail polish remover or some other killer fluid. I was just flushing mine down the toilet (we have septic) and a bug expert friend said that would not kill them; they'd just float out and crawl out the leach field and rise again. Nasty little buggars! Just thinking about them and typing about them makes me feel like I have them crawling on me.... |

Ticks all over around here. Dogs get frontline and the lyme vaccine. I guess we are just strange up here, because almost every night we have a creepy crawler in the bed! Wood ticks mostly, but a few deer ticks here, TONS of deer ticks up nort. Never give it much of a thought. Ticks are just part of living in the country.
