I'll be bringing home my first cbr pup in a few weeks, and I'd like to hear some thoughts about any concerns related to small umbilical hernias in puppies. One of the 4.5 week old males in the litter has an ~ dime-sized bump that the breeder said he would pay to have removed later, if necessary. The breeder said that it typically goes away w/age, and he seems like an honest person if it did have to be removed later. There are 2 other males that I am also considering. My main question is: should I count this against the pup and focus on the other 2 males or should I just ignore the bump altogether? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks,

Mike

Umbilical hernias are a congenital defect (present at birth).Occasionally, a navel hernia may develop if an umbilical cord is cut too close to the abdominal wall – or if the bitch LICKS and chews excessively the puppies belly.

Most of the time small hernias do fine without surgical repair, but if you can push a finger through the umbilical ring, the hernia should be checked by a vet.

One should be cautious when using these dogs for breeding purposes, as umbilical hernias can be genetically passed on.

I won't let that keep me from choosing the pup...stuff happens, the mother could of chewed it too close too. Sounds like the breeder is being honest and fair with the offer to get it fixed. Like I said, it wouldn't stop me from taking the pup if that's the one I really liked.

We've had a couple of puppies over the years who had umbilical cord hernias. As I recall, one did require surgery and the other disappeared on its own. The breeders were upfront about it and a deduction was made from the price of the puppy for a surgical repair. It wasn't a big issue and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a puppy under those circumstances again.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll just pick the one that strikes me and ignore the hernia. I'll be sure to post again in a couple weeks when I pick the little one up.
