Kyla is 5 months old and for about 3 months now she has been sick I am at my wits end..The Vets say it is a sinus infection she has been on 3 antibiotic treatments and has been on constant anti histamine treatment...She started out with her eyes running sometimes it would have a yellow color to the discharge and she was vomiting ran fevers she would also rub her head on the ground during this time(vet said it was a headache) and so on so I figured sounds about right..then she got better after antibiotics for about a week then vomiting started again so took her back in and the vet said probably just never got over completely with the first round of antibiotics so took her home and she did fine until about a week after that course of antibiotics and she started vomiting again. This time Vet said she has a another sinus infection was probably going to be a problem from now until fall but that she might grow out of it..anyway took her home and gave the antibiotics and she was doing great it has been almost three weeks since last antibiotics..she has been on the anti histamine this entire time. Plus every time I take her they give her a shot of antibiotics and steroids. Tonight she threw up yet again guys I have never in my life seen so much vomit come out of one puppy in all my life. Now it was partially digested so I know it was vomit and not regurgitation. Now just like all the other times she is laying around and you can tell she just doesn't feel well. But all day she has acted fine no signs at all that she was not feeling well. I have been having problems with her eating though or rather lack of interest in food but today she ate very good. In all of this she is teething she has lost about 8 teeth this week alone.. I do not know what to think...Has anyone experienced this before? I am taking her to the Vet in the morning but just thought I would see if anyone has dealt with a problem like this that might have some information or questions I should be asking the Vet.....(Kyla is 42lbs, 5 Months old, CBR all shots are up to date)

Kyla doesn't act sick most of the time. She runs around plays I train her and she is seemingly fine. But I am just really worried that every couple of weeks she is vomiting and once she does vomit she lays around for awhile.......Well just about time for me to take Kyla to the vet .........

Cheers

The Vet said it was a sinus infection..She was running a fever when we got there. He gave her a long lasting shot of steroids and antibiotic shot sent her home with antibiotics and more antihistamine. Said Kyla also has a sensitive stomach and wants me to change her to life science for sensitive stomachs. We feed Kyla Innova now I do not want to feed her life science. What other foods do you recommend? I haven't got to talk with JD about this as of yet so I am waiting to see if he wants me to get a second opinion before I take her JD is still in Iraq hopefully gets to come home in August but we are not sure as of yet. Anyway help would be appreciated
Cheers

I just got off the phone with the Breeders they are both Vets and they are saying I need a second opinion they are thinking maybe a foreign body or something along those lines so I am going to take Kyla to a vet in Huntsville..Thanks for the advice Mr. Smith I appreciate it...

It sounds as though the antibiotics are having an effect, but maybe aren't quite killing off the infection. Do you happen to know what the infection is thought to be or what antibiotic is being prescribed?

Giving steroid with an antibiotic may not have been the ideal solution. Though injected steroids do suppress inflammation and can make an animal more comfortable, they also can suppress the immune system.

If your dog's breeder isn't available, is there a different vet in your area who you could take Kyla to?

Second opinion sounds like a good idea to me also.

Carolyn,
I would definanitaly get a second opinion. She is been sick far to long for it to be a "sinus infection". I haven't seen a "sinus infection" in a puppy that lasts that long unless there was a foreign body in the nose. Yes puppy/adult dogs can get "eye infections" or have some "allergys" which sounds like your dog may possibly have had describing your symptoms. Usually those conditions don't cause vomiting and feeling crappy. Sounds like some intestinal upset for some reason, changing food might help but first I would check into why she has a fever and vomiting. That is not normal. Has bloodwork been done yet to find out if the fever is indeed caused by a infection, and make sure her chemistry panel is normal and no other organ function problems. I would be also inclined to have some x-rays and possible barium series to find out if there is a foreign body somewhere's. The steroid shot is probally making her feel better but not correcting the problem. Good luck with her and hope she gets better soon, she shouldn't have to be sick for that long. Find a different vet if you have one in your area.

Keep us posted.

Carolyn,

Please let us know how she is.

A couple of points...I've always been led to believe that when infections are involved, you do not want to administer steroids because they can make the infection worse.

I also used to feed Innova and found it was too rich for some of my chessies. It's a great food, but very dense by comparison to other foods of the same protein/fat/quality content, and very high in calories also as compared to others. I'm currently feeding the Canidae Chicken & Rice with excellent results for all of my chessies for the first time in a long time. The protein/fat content is slightly higher at 26%/15% but the calorie content is not as high. One of my girls is borderline IBS and the other one has a sensitive stomach and was prone to bouts of vomiting until I made this switch.

Hopefully this new vet will get to the root of the problem and a successful treatment will be found.

I recently switched one dog to Purina Pro Plan "Sensitive Skin & Stomach' and am really pleased with the results. It is salmon-based.
Coat looks good too.

Hello everyone thanks for all the concern for Kyla and all the advice. I just returned from the new Vet.. Kyla doesn't have a sinus infection actually her blood work shows no infection at all. No foreign bodies or blockages where found on x ray. So we are at a stand still until the steroid wears off in a month. Vet stopped the antibiotics to see if any changes occur. Such as she starts vomiting again or fever returns. We are doing that to see if it is the antibiotics she is responding to or the steroid treatments. A POSSIBLE DX is Addison's Disease but of course can't do the testing until all the steroids are out of her system so that it doesn't give false results. But at this time its just a wait and see kinda thing...Too many things it could be and while she has antibiotics/steroids in her system no way of getting to the truth until they are gone..Will keep every one up to date on the situation....

Regards,
JD & Carolyn

Carolyn,
Glad to hear this visit to the vet turned out better. Sounds like this one is doing the right thing with her. Glad no foreign bodies were found and no infection. Good luck and hopefully she won't have any more symptoms.

Carolyn, just a thought, but has she been tested for coccidia and giardia. Both of these internal 'parasites' will cause vomiting and diahhrea that is reoccuring until they've been treated. Coccidia is also something that puppies are prone to if the protozoa is anywhere in the ground, and you have no way of knowing until you have a problem.

You mentioned she is teething. Did it occur to the vet that the symptoms are from the stress of teething ? Human babies often develop ear infections, stomach upset and various other symptoms. I have had pups get swollen eyelids and runny eyes while teething especially the molars.
