To be more specific on the worm issue, Teal all of a sudden had one hangin' bout 8 inches!! EEEEEE!! What is the best med to kill them dead now. I thought he was thinning a little but was thinking he was just not keeping up with his growing. (legs and head VS. body weight. This really did catch me by surprise because the vet, I thought, had treated him with an injectable preventative. Was i mistaken or did this med just not work. It was only 2 mo. ago! thanks John

John,
Well, it could be tape or round worm. Most worm medications do not cover tapeworms but Drontal Plus does. It will treat any type of worm. But it is expensive. You might want to take a stool sample in. If you give heartworm medication, Interceptor covers the most common worms along with being a heartworm preventative. Dyane |

Sounds like a round worm. Tape worms are segmented and usually break off in the lower GI. If you just treated for worms it might just be the dead ones coming out....I treated my last girl when she was really wormy one time and it looked like a pile of spaghetti noodles on the lawn....boy, I just picked all the nasty topics to chat on today.....must be something in the air bringing back some fine memories....tucking in a cows intestines and now talking worms.... John, I would have your vet check a stool sample. It does sound like roundworms, but like someone else indicated if you are giving a heartwork preventative it could be killing them and that's what you got was a dead worm.
Otherwise the vet usually worms with Panacur. I buy an over-the-counter which is about the same as Panacur. It's called Nemex. Kathy Miller Kathy Miller Sandy Oak Chesapeakes |

OK flat, white, was segemented, and appeared dead any idea on that? I think this would be a tape worm? Teal is on heart worm meds but was given about a week or two ago. That would be quite a long time for the meds and this result.

Yup, that sounds like tapeworm, heartworm meds won't work on them, you will need praziquantel, most common brand is Droncit, you can get it from the vet. Here is a pic of a tapeworm...

Actually, they are two different drugs. Panacur is Fenbendazole, Nemex is Pyrantel Pamoate. Nemex is the "over the counter" version that is much less concentrated than the prescription version pyrantel, Strongid T. Both drugs are very effective against roundworms, but the Panacur is more effective against certain other worms, and also will treat Giardia, and the Taenia tapeworm, but not the Dipylidium tapeworm, which is the most common tapeworm in dogs). But it is also a lot more expensive! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Lisa Porter, Lisa Porter Tollwest Kennels Reg'd Tollers & Chesapeakes |

John, Quick word of caution. Check your (or should I say your wife's) Rat Terrier too!!! Esp if the dog sniffs or comes into contact with Teal's stool. You do not want a re-infection ping-ponging back and forth between dogs.
Also, now we know the probable reason Teal was going potty in the house, could not help himself. Could have developed the worm infestation at ranch?? Contact with other animal stool that was infected (horses, raccoons, skunks, etc). Or a neighbors' dog is infected and Teal came into contact at the house - so check if neighboring dogs show infestation. Again, you do not want Teal to constantly being exposed to wornm-laced stool from another dog, esp it that owner does not treat that dog. Teal's recent behavioral change can also be explained by the infestation too. When a dog is feeling sick, discomfort, or 'out-of-sorts', the dogs' disposition, behaviors, and mannorisms also are affected and change. Imagine how you would feel with the large, and often numerous, flat worms (tapeworms) crawing in your gut. Hope ALL comes out alright (pardon the pun - could not resist). Best Regards, Charlie |

Thanks, Doc, my research says these are flea related. Part of this could be my fault because i was always under the impression that advantix was to be used after 6 mo of age. It then got cold enough around here that the fleas usually are not a problem. I did check and saw a couple fleas on him ( it did warm up here considerably) So i have used advantix and will take him in for a good deworming. I will watch the little rat also. Funny, he has no signs of fleas at all and they are real easy to see on him. I guess the advantix is working on him real well. Im just pissed that i could let this happen! Vet laughed and said not to worry he will be fine.

John, The worm infestation can result from flea bite too, but, not as common as ingesting/sniffing worm larve. Same with misquitoe bites. Any meat, esp pork, chicken, other game, can be ladden with egg/larve that cannot be seen with the eye but is still there. Same with training fowl (if bite breaks skin, egg/larve in fowl's blood). Also, Teal could have ate another animal's droppings (chessies love that). Even sniffing/licking grass where infected feces once laid.
Due to most worm infestations usually result from direct/indirect contact with worm egg/larve, either from other stool, snffing, licking, etc, don't blame yourself about flea-treatments (usually not the true cause). Best Regards, Charlie |

John, I'm not far from you and our dogs have all just turned up with fleas. I didn't see them on my poodle or on my chessies, but they all started scratching and I found flea dirt on the poodle. My roommate found fleas on her two little dogs and her cat, so we did them all with Advantage, and now no scratching. You won't get rid of the fleas here in Northern California until we get a good freeze!! Kathy Miller Kathy Miller Sandy Oak Chesapeakes |

Fleas, what a pain.
I lived in Arroyo Grande, CA until three months ago and was infested with fleas. Could'nt get rid of them. Then moved to WA and now they are gone. The only time I had a worm problem was because of fleas or so the blame was laid by the vet. |

Here's a link to an excellent worm thread on a sled dog site: http://www.sleddogcentral.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3656&whichpage=4 in which the linked page addresses tapeworms.
But the bottom line is that drugs like Panacur or Safegard that rely on fenbendazole will only kill the type tapes dogs may get from eating small rodents or their remains. They will NOT kill flea related tapes. The drug praziquantel will kill all types of tapeworms and can be found over-the-counter in relatively inexpensive form like "D-worm". How do you know other then seeing them come out in the dogs stool???
I have always heard if the dog does this thing I call the " * tractor pull" after going to the bathroom that might be a sign of worms... *A tractor pull is the dog pulling his butt along the ground... Is the tractor pull thing right or wrong?? John |

John, My dogs do that all the time and don't have worms. Take a fresh stool sample in and have your vet check it for parasites. That's the only sure way unless you see them in the stool. Kathy Miller Kathy Miller Sandy Oak Chesapeakes |
