against the makers of Canidae Dog Food
Admin | January 27, 2009 5:16 pm

Madison, Wisconsin, January 26, 2009 A class action lawsuit has
been filed on behalf of dog owners nationwide against the makers of
CANIDAE brand dog food, seeking payment of veterinarian bills for
dogs who allegedly took ill after consuming the food between last
summer and the present. The lawsuit also asks the Court to order the
defendants, Canidae Corporation and Diamond Pet Foods, to launch a
corrective informational campaign. Affected dogs have experienced
rectal bleeding, loose and bloody stools, lethargy, and death,
according to consumer complaints posted on internet forums and
websites.

"We can't push back the clock: if hundreds or thousands of dogs have
suffered, that can't be reversed. But the lawsuit at least gives dogs
and their owners an avenue for redress," stated Ilan Chorowsky, one
of the plaintiff's lawyers with the Progressive Law Group, which has
offices in Madison, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. The Animal Law
Center, Rosner & Mansfield LLP, and Doyle Lowther LLP also represent
the plaintiff.

I can't beleive i am hearing this! These are the same symptoms Widgeon had and i fed her diamond dog food up at the ranch!! The store in lower lake assured me that the product was not a part of the recall!!! Even though we have been told she died from immune mediated thrombocytopenia,The symptoms are the same except that widgeon was also bleeding from her mouth as well. Does anyone know more about the underlying cause for the bleeding from eating this tainted food?

John, having treated one of my dogs for bloody IBS and knowing a friend who has a chessie who is being treated for the same thing your Widgeon may have died from, I'd have to say they are entirely different, and that your Widgeon's problem was not from food.

There has been no poisoning or toxins in the Canidae food that caused the current rash of ongoing problems with the food, but rather a change in their formula. They added more meat and grains to the food and apparently it's too rich for most dogs. Mine never adjusted to the new formula of the chicken and Rice and my Jazz's problem I don't really think had to do with the food formula but rather an intolerance she had for the lamb in the chicken, lamb and turkey formula.

But, I think the class action lawsuit has been initiated because a lot of people spent a lot of money trying to treat what may have appeared to be IBS and/or bloody IBS when all along it was the food.

I spent a lot of money on pepcid, metronidazole and anti-diarrhea medication until I discovered the last bag of Canidae I had was the old formula and putting the dogs back on this immediately terminated all my problems. So, I took them off of it.

Also, attempts to notify Canidae of problems with their new formulas met with deaf ears on the part of Canidae, which was also infuriating. So perhaps this class action is nothing more than an attempt to wake up the powers to be at Canidae....I don't know but they needed some kind of wake up call!
