I had my vet do a full thyroid panel on Sherman earlier this week and she just called to confirm hypothyroid. I'll go in later today to discuss results and pick up his thyroid meds.
My question is: Is the full panel done again when the vet retests to check if we are working with the proper medicine dosage, and when is the retest usually done? I ask because it does not seem like my vet has had much experience with hypothyroid. And I don't want to insist the full panel be done again if it doesn't need to! Thanks! Valerie |

Sorry to hear Sherman was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Most vet will use MSU (Michigan State University) if they want a accurate full thyroid panel run. If so they offer the complete panel when first done and then if a confirmed case is made the other samples sent in can be sent in as a thyroid monitoring panel which is a little cheaper. They still like to run the whole panel to get the whole picture and make sure the dosage is correct. I can't remember how long they have to be on the medication in the beginning before a re test, I'm thinking 4 weeks but not certain. Once the levels are correct most will retest once a year to make sure it hasn't changed. Here is a article for you. Good luck,
