My 9 year old male has just been diagnosed with athritis in his right shoulder. I noticed he had a slight limp 2 or 3 times over the course of last duck season. I thought it was a recurring soft tissue injury, because he either recovered once he got moving or rested up during the week while I was stuck at work. I mentioned this to my vet during his annual check up and he diagnosed him with arthrits in his right shoulder, but thinks he will respond well to joint supplements.

My vet suggested 12-1500 mg of Glucosamine along with
8-900 mg Chondroitine
MSM
Vitamin C....

What brands of joint supplements have others on the board had success with? The stuff I picked up today is going to run a little over $1.50/day which he is certainly worth, but I would like to find a better price.

Thanks,
James

There are many supplements on the market. Usually the one's from the vet office have the apporiate levels of medication in them vs the over the counter ones except Cosequin. Cosequin is now a over the counter medication that is one of the first joint supplements out there. It is a good product except we have one at our clinic called Synovi g3 which is cheaper than cosequin. There is a new product out now that you might ask your vet about getting for you. It is called PHY COX and it is made by DVM pharmaciutals which is the same manufactor of Synovi products. The difference in medication is that Phy Cox is a joint supplement with an additional medication that helps reduce inflammation, which is a herbal medication so you don't need a prescription for it. This medication was developed for the older dogs that have artritis but arn't bad enought for NSAIDS.

With any joint supplement the dog needs to be on it for at least 6-8 weeks before you may see any signs of improvement. You start out at a loading dose for the first month then you can decrease the dose to the maintenance level.

Good luck,
