I have a 9 week old pup and he is itching pretty bad at times. It seems to really bother him and he has bumps all over him. I bathed him in shampoo the vet. gave me , but its not helping. He has been eating pro plan and purina one. Any suggestions. Found no fleas when bathing him, but the vet gave me frontline.

First question: are you feeding your pup the food the breeder recommended? Also, why two foods? The wrong food can have an adverse affect on many dogs. If you don't have him on the food the breeder had been feeding him, I might be inclined to switch back to that and see if it eliminates the problem.
Second question: Have you had him in grass? There is a mite in grass that can cause this. You may recall lying in the grass with bare arms and when you get up your arms are itching like crazy. It's from these little grass mites and they can really affect puppies. A flea shampoo that can be used for puppies usually gets rid of the mites, but you have to keep the puppies out of the grass until they are older. Third question: Could the puppy have gotten into something that could cause an allergic reaction? Keep us posted. Kathy Miller |

Thank you Kathy,
The breeder had him on purina one and I switched him to pro plan. After watching him itch, I switched him back to purina one. He has been in the grass, but because he uses the bathroom out back, its hard to keep him out of it. I will take your advice and try to keep him out of the grass as much as I can. Thanks again, Rob |

Where are the bumps? Did the vet say anything about a staph infection? Puppy's can get a staph infection which is bumps on the stomach, usually goes away with antibiotics. Did you bath the puppy before you bathed him with the shampoo from the vet? The shampoo might not of agreed with him. If still really itchy after the the frontline application I would take him back to the vet for a recheck and possibly check for mites.

Are you speaking of grass mites and I'm guessing that the frontline won't help? The bumps are all over him and it really bothers him. How do you get rid of theses mites?

If it's grass mites, then a bath with a gentle flea shampoo, but make sure it can be used on puppies as not all flea shampoos can. But then you have to keep him out of the grass after that as they will reinfect.
I would talk to your vet though to make sure you are using the proper course of treatment, and make sure to ask him about the grass mites as not all vets are aware of these critters. Kathy Miller |

What kind of mites did the Vet dignosis? Just courious and courious on how you are treating them. Glad you finally have a answer once they are gone you shouldn't have any problems.
