ok so my question is can you cut a chessies hair really at all. i took my dog to the groomer (not knowing at the time you shouldnt) and she said she shaved him with a #7, so now he just looks like a short haired chessie (has more of waves than curls now). did i screw up by getting it cut or is it alright, cuz i do like the looks of him now, but dont want to continue doing it if its bad for him. any answers will be greatly appreciateds

Well I get my labs shaved. After they are done hunting and retired to house dogs. It seems like the hair never grows back the same.

Where do live and how cold does the water get?

I don't know where you got your dog from, but instead of asking silly assed questions and starting a flame war with these guys how about this...

Get ahold of the person who sold you the dog and ask...

Mr. Breeder, is there anything I need to know about a Chessies skin, coat, and grooming? Are there any other health issues that I need to be aware of?

And please don't post up that you got him from some puppy mill or pet shop.

Hebert don't get discouraged. Your post brought some light hearted humor. Your now a chessie person -your one of us. Even though your in the Navy remember we are few in numbers but we are proud of our chessies.

Hebert

Please accept my apology and know that anyone who rescues a Chessie is #1 in my book and no you didn't hurt the dog any . Just let the hair grow back and it will be fine. I give my dogs Biotin 1500 mcg and Fish oil concentrate and they have killer coats all year round. I hunt all over the place and in cold water too . Klamath Falls , Willows, Los Banos, Mendota. I also train year round and sometimes the heat is pretty bad.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the toughest retrievers in the world and as long as they have water , love, and training they can and will do anything for their owners.

Again please accept my most humble apology for cracking back and keep up the good work .

Welcome to the family

Kent

Good deal that you took in a rescue. These dogs got too much to give to not have a home.

As a P.S. to my above post, I want to thank you for what you are doing in Navy. I don't know what your job there is, and it doesn't make any difference,

Thank-You

Hi,
What no one has mentioned is that the coat of a Chesapeake serves two functions. It protects a dog from both cold and heat. The only thing I do to help my guys out in the heat is to brush them to remove any dead hair when they are blowing coat. I seldom cut or brush my own hair, so it was important to me, when choosing a breed of dog, that I didn't end up with one that required more grooming time than I'm willing to put into myself. Big Grin
Your guy will be fine. And congrats on the new rescue. I'm a rescue volunteer in MD.

I am a dog groomer so here is valid advice. NEVER EVER shave a double coated dog! Ie chessie, golden lab, pyr etc. Why, bc what happens for one is that the guard hairs are now gone until they grow back and so is most of the undercoat. The undercoat acts like insulation....do you remove your house insulation in the summer bc it is hot? No..so don't do it to your dog. Two the undercoat will grow back thicker and longer than it was last time and eventually takes over the guard hairs and results in matts and insulating issues.

That being said though once won't do too much damgage, you will have more blow out in the fall make sure you use a dog rake (furminator) to help reduce the undercoat back to it's normal amount. I can't believe the groomer shaved your dog....

Chessies are wash and wear dogs....a dunk in the lake (no shampoo needed) and brush with a pin brush or dog rake and that's it! You can trim the tail hair if it's out of control but really they don't need much maintenance....that's why I have two..I deal with enough hair during the dau it is so nice to not have to deal with much at home!

Wow, that was infomative. I will say that my chessies coat's do thin out in the summer especialy when I do a lot of water work. I comb them every day. Just a once over nothing extensive. At one time I never even had a comb or brush for my chessie. But when I entered a dog show many moons ago they said to me do I groom my dog? My response was I use my fingers like this. They all laughed at me and I then bought a comb. Oh yeah I won a glass thing at that show which was the Chessie specialty in Pa. Who knew!!!

Hebert first congrats. on taking a rescue Peake into your life, over the summer and fall my Peakes see a lot of swamps and ponds in my neck of the woods. I show my dogs every once in awhile and I never use dog shampoo all I do is take them swimming in a lake or river give a good brushing keep the toe nails trimmed. They are a low maintenance dog and thats one of many reasons i,m owned by them, sometimes I just hose them down at home

Come on Mike, you go to a show and this is what you come back with? You should NEVER EVER use a pin brush, comb, etc on a Chessie.... We don't have Foo Foo dogs.... If you need to get old coat out, just use your fingers as a way to rake it out....wet and towel dry....that's all you need to do.
