I have a 4 y/o female Chessie that was just diagnosed with Addison's. I was just wondering if anybody else has been diagnosed with this. My breeder has not come acrossed it with any of her litters. She has also asked around to other breeders and she hasn't heard of any as of yet.
Thanks, Jada's mama, Jo-Ann |

That is too bad, good luck with your treatments. Have you seen the website Addison Dogs, under their FAQ there is a website for a study being conducted. We hope Jada adapts to the treatments. Jeff |

Don't see to much of Addison's in the clinic I work at (which is good), have never seen a chessie with it which doesn't mean it can't happen. Anything can always happen to any dog. The dogs we have on treatment are all doing very well on there treatment. Is your Vet using a injectable medication Percorten? We have had really good success manageing(sp) it with that. The dogs are usually on a three week schedule of coming in and getting the injection. Some are also on a regeimn of prednisolone. We also do bloodwork during the initinal phase to make sure they are getting the correct dose and then once a year after that. It is a very treatable disease.
Here is a link to a veterinary article about Addisons. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=608 Good luck. JoAnn Stancer Sand Spring Chesapeakes MySpace Blog: http://blogs.myspace.com/index...l&friendID=442677052 Without friends, no one would choose to live.....Aristotle |

I've heard of a few chessies who've been diagnosed with Addison's disease, but nothing from my lines.
It's a big problem in Standard Poodles....my former boss had a lovely poodle who had it. I gave the dog monthly injections of Percorten that JoAnn Stancer mentioned in her response. Kathy Miller Sandy Oak Chesapeakes Kathy Miller Sandy Oak Chesapeakes |

Well, I called the vets today, and he won't be back till Monday. I sure hope the thunderstorms don't come this weekend, as that is probably her biggest stressor. The girls at the office said the Percorten came in and asked if I wanted to pick it up and give her the shot myself. I said no way! I need to speak with him and find out if she'll also need oral meds and if so what kind, how much, when to have blood drawn again and most importantly how and where to give the shots. Monday can't come soon enough. We still haven't really heard of Chessie's have Addison's except these few. But, the bottom line is she has it and now we must deal with it. We just love this little girl to death and I would still like to get another one sometime down the road. She is the sweetest little girl. Thanks for the responses. I have chronic Lyme Disease and 12 yrs ago, my only way to learn and find others that were going through the same thing was from newsgroups. Thanks again. Jo-Ann

The Percortin shot is very easy to give. The main thing to remember is to mix the vial very well before you draw up the medication. The medication seperates while sitting around and needs to be mixed well. Once you draw up the right amount then it is given SQ (subcutanously)we inject ours between the shoulder blades. Being a big dog she won't even know what happened. Kinda like giving a vaccine.

Thanks, I figured that is where it would be given. I will go over it with him anyway so it goes in the SQ. Before you know it, it will just be routine like her Advantix and Heartworm meds. It's always the first few times, then you feel more comfortable. Thanks again, Jo-Ann
