I recently bought 36 Neuman Bennett dummies from Gun Dog Supply. Well.. I thought I had bought 36 Neuman Bennett dummies from Gun dog supply. What I actually got were 2 Neuman Bennett dummies ( with the Neuman Bennett name on them) and 34 Neuman Bennett replicas ( probably made in China) ..but this is not the story, just me venting. The problem I'm having is this. The dummies are soft and my dog has taken to :
A- Running back to me with them in the cigar postion ( which she never used to do)

B- Chews on them when at heal on the line before I can tell her '' drop''.

I am using the regular size. She lets the dummy slip out the side of her mouth all the time. I've tried telling her NO..DROP..take the dummy out, FETCH, put the dummy back in her mouth HOLD..cuff her under the chin..HOLD..she STILL lets the dummy slide to the end. Obviously when she does that at times she'll drop the damn thing. She'll dive for it right away but still..

Either that or seh'll run back with the dummy holding it by the rope and swinging it left and right.
No matter what I do, she still does this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Marc. My boy Poacher does the cigar thing also. It bothered me at first but now I just let it be. For me I decided that as long as the bumper is picked up quickly and returned to hand proptly im not going to nit pick about cigaring. Probably decided that because I didnt know how to fix it.LOL The nawing thing I would not let slide though! wish I could help good luck!

Dan

great to hear from you!. How's your lovely wife?
Iknow ..I know..but it just drives me nuts to see her come back looking like George Burns( oh yeah..that's right..your to young to know who George Burns was!). The chomping started at the same time. I can see her crunch down on the dummy.I tell her NO and take the dummy away. I dont want to nick her besides me ( lord knows I feel like it) but she still does it. I've notice that she doesnt do it on the large size dummies. Maybee I should just sell my normal size ones and switch to bigger ones.

by the way..the canada's are coming in BIG this week.! One day, you should come up here to hunt for the weekend. Bring the wife..I heard she's a good shot Smile

I'm another who doesn't get a wedgie over cigaring:

But I'm not keen on the notion of chomping becoming habitual.

You mentioned your bumpers being soft, and I've been told that soft bumpers, like DTs, are actually supposed to encourage a better hold than hard bumpers. But I've experimented with DTs on a dog that was chomping because of a loose hold, and they seemed more problematic, if anything, than my hard EZ-Rotationals.

One reason I also keep some Neuman Bennetts around, however, is that they can be given the feel of life, which I have found to encourage better hold. To do so, pull out the red valve enough to open it, submerge the bumper in water, squeeze out some air, and let some water be sucked back into the bumper. Then push the valve shut, and you should find that the water inside the bumper sloshes back and forth enough with movement of the bumper to shift its center of gravity back and forth simulating movement and life. If it does not do so appreciably, you've either too much or too little water in the bumper.

With such a "lively" bumper, Pup either maintains a good grip or it "gets away" from him.

My youngster was messing around with some bumpers and also picking them up by the rope. Rather than make a huge issue, I cut off the ropes and changed the bumpers to smaller ones. When I used the original bumpers again the problem had resolved itself and she picked them up properly.

There are plenty of times when various issues need a direct approach, but if ever there is a way of dealing with something by taking a side step I will.

Suggest you use some other bunpers for a while and then re-introduce the other ones and see what happens.

Ive read an article by a great author that you can put pvc reducers on the ends of the bumpers and it will get them carrying it in the middle. Ive never had to try it though!

Thanks for the tips..I'll stop being so anal about it. As long as she doesnt drop on the way. She holds the thing so losely that it just slips there as she's running back. Looks like
freeking George Burns. ( but with a better rug).

Hey Dan..were pounding them good up here. You should really come up for snow goose hunt with Cindy one day..
