What kind of drills to you do to teach dog to look at the long gun when it is pinched by two short guns? I know key word "look long". But sometimes they get stuck on the two short guns.
When you say know they look to the left gun. Say no they look to the right gun. |

I would suggest that you put all three stations in the field but only throw the long single. May need to have thrower attact the dog with movement or noise. I would repeat this senario in different ways. It is good practice to set up multiple visable marks but only run them a singles whatever the concept. You can build on the single by combining it with the outside double. You could also start with the outside double and then retire them and then do the long single. You could start with the outside marks retired. It will also help with head swinging, cue them off the other marks if they swing. When a dog gets used to seeing several gun stations but only having one of them throw a mark they are less likely to pull off or not look. It takes time, some cueing at the line and repetition. After you build a foundation on this concept you can run the triple for confidence. Break the concept down into it parts. At some point you will want to select the short birds no matter the order.
Then reverse it short middle, double outside long. And on and on it goes. |

Thanks Langhornes for the reply. Right now that's what I'm doing - having the long gun throw and just picking up that bird and leaving the line. Your advice is sound.

One thing you can try is always using a shotgun on the key mark. I've trained with a couple of pros that insist on it.
I have also seen some very sucsessful people build the whole test. Throw a key mark as a guns up single. Run all the dogs. Throw the key mark then an intermediat mark, run all the dogs, retire the key mark. Run all the dogs. Add a flyer, retire what you will. Back when my wife would train with me we would see a triple and work the dogs as three walking singles, repeating as needed to get them perfect and then throw a triple when we had help. The problem was that the help would then want to run the triple with the expected results. |
