Hello first time poster here, sorry if this is on the boards all ready i could not find it with the search.

I live by the river and walk my dog down there almost every morning for obedience training and then play as reward for training. I have been doing this near the river so she would know to only go to river with permission. (yeah right) Well she is very good and has not gone to the water without permission in 3 months.

Well this morning she got a wild hair and took off for the river and proceeded to drag a large log in play with it for the next half an hour paying no attention to me. When i finally got her out I scolded her and decided she would not have her breakfast. Usually after her morning training sessions she gets to eat and this is probably like another reward to her.

Am i right to withhold her food as punishment? Will it get through to her or will she just think i am being mean?

Sorry for the long winded post, any replies would be appreciated.

Ruben

Your dog will not know why she is not getting fed...

Correction (not punishment) should always be within 2 seconds of the infraction...so you really ought to have run into the river and grabbed her...pretty much guarantee that she now believes she is safe when she is in water...

Thank you for the replies. I appreciate the help. I actually came home on first break and fed her because i felt like a butthead. It was my fault for giving her such a perfect opportunity to fail.

Thanks again, I am sure it is not the last time i will need your help.
