Thanks for the link to Butch Goodwin's new CD on retriever training. Butch lived in Glenwood Springs, CO. for quite a few years and I met him during the mid-80's at several of the Chesapeake club events in Colorado. When I moved from Ft. Collins in late 1990 to Western CO., I trained with Butch and several others on a wonderful piece of property in Carbondale,CO. that was leased by his good friend and gun dog trainer, Mike Gould. I was sorry to see this land and great water gobbled up to build multi-million dollar homes because of its proximity to Aspen. About this time (early '90's), Butch went to work for Linda Harger in Idaho and I did keep in touch with him as I pursued single parenthood.
The past few years I have read his articles with interest in Retriever Journal and have been constantly amazed at how far he has journeyed. This latest release is a monumental effort and the little I have read so far has been very enjoyable.
The Butch Goodwin I knew long ago was a real nice guy that was, and still is, a staunch supporter of the Chesapeake breed. Whether you agree with some of the methods described in his publications or not, it is wonderful we have a "Brown Dog Writer" who has gained national prominence. Way to go Butch!!
In fall 2002,we came all from the Netherlands to Idaho to buy a (excellent!!)puppy from Linda Harger.(we met also John Lundy in my country one of the biggest man ever on Chessies,it was an honour!) Thru Internet and searching before we did go to the USA,I found Butch Goodwin in Idaho. In his spare time he invited us and showed us a lot on the browndogs, man wah beautiful! Since july/august2003 I did have his CD with trainingsession, movies, pictures and more than 600 pages with text.Ok it's unbelievable, but thru!!It defenitly did help me as being relat.unexperienced,20 years of Chessies,to understand our dogs. On his website you can read every 1-2 months new articles he writes in the Retriever Journal and the old articles since 1995.Resume,a lot of info amd pictures and suggestions on problems with training our Chessies.By the way,he honours also the women and men he worked with and were an inspiration for him!!!(and of course the dogs!!!) Billy, As Keith mentioned in his post, we knew Butch from Colorado. When I started looking for another Peake around 1996, I called Butch. I put a deposit down for one of his breedings, but he also told me to check out a nice young Peake in PA.named Decks, owned by a guy named Bruce Mitchell. You know the rest.
Butch has always been a staunch supporter of our breed and has quite a following due to his articles in the Retriever Journal.
He is, in my opinion a very articulate and knowledable writer, and although I may not agree with all his training ideas, I am going to order the CD, and see what it has to offer. I don't believe you can ever have to much training material.

Asking who Butch Goodwin is too *some* like asking who Mike Lardy is? But then I don't genuinely believe anyone in Chessie circles or who has ever picked up a copy of "Retriever Journal" does not know who Mr. Goodwin is? Or not, Peake

Billy,
I think that is a great idea and maybe some communication from you would be effective. After all, Team Chesapeake is your "baby" and has connected so many folks interested in this breed.
Also, with the Specialty in McCall, Idaho later this year, I am sure Butch knows of available training grounds.
As far as I know,he still is in the Chessies. His whole CD and the pictures and movies in it are 90% with our browndogs, and he still is also doing some work with dogs for training in his kennel. He has a strong idea about linebreeding and to get a puppy from him you have to wait 2 years.

I have the cd/book and I think it is well worth the money for a young trainer. The combination of text images and video gives a thorough explaination of various techniques. I would still love a hard copy of this book. It seems to be geared more towards developing the hunting retriever than the field trialer he makes this distinction! Is there a distinction?
I don't think there is as long if we are patience and don't hurry and forget the obedience at hunting. I think this CD is a good "paper"whenever my inspiration let me down. Another article is Of The Dahl's about the Soft Dog and how to handle them, outstanding!!! DD

I don't think so,as long as we are patience and be ware to let them listen and obey during the hunting. With this CD I feel that when i'm out of inspiration,I can learn again something. Also of the Dahl's about training a Soft Dog,beautiful!!! DD

Don't kid yourself. There is a huge difference!! If you are interested in advanced field work, the best references are those of Lardy and Carr. You can find Lardy's stuff available on www.totalretriever.com. Carr's stuff is a little harder to find, but he pioneered most of the successful field training techniques. A good introduction for those considering advanced field stuff is Jim Dobbs' book. It is available on his site www.dobbsdogs.com. Don't let the references to e-collar training set you back if you are anti-collar. It still contains a lot of very good training techniques and helpful aids.
