I really like Goodwin' book...

I also think that any number of other dvds show the ff method well - I think it is easier for someone doing ff for the first time to actually SEE the process, rather than read about it...Rick Stawski's Fowl Dawgs I DVD is a good one...I haven't seen Evan Graham's DVD's yet..but would imagine that they are very good too...

Tenor,
If an on hand mentor is not an option there is no more user friendly method for the first time F-F'er than found in the pages of "The 10 - Minute Retriever" by the Dahl's. It gives you as thorough a step by step approach to success as can be found in written form.
Good Training,

Tenor,

I agree with Dave.........if you haven't FF a dog before, it would be very helpful if you had someone experienced in that area of training to guide you through or that you could address your questions to about the process......I also agree with Dave's recommendation of "The 10-minute Retriever"......and have often suggested this books to people who want to FF on their own........

Good Luck

I've been reading and following Evan Grahams book. Since I last posted a few weeks ago.Gunner is doing great. He picked up on it really quick. It didn't take long with the toe pinch. And as far as the ear pinch all I have to do is move towards his ear and he's grabbin for the roller. Another question for all the pro's out there. How long each day should I work with him. Right now I spend about 15min everyday. I'm thinking at the rate he's going about 2 more weeks I'll start with walk fetching. But practice practice is what we are doing over and over again. Thanks for all response

sounds like you and Gunner are doing very well..One thing you might consider (if you aren't already doing it) is splitting that 15 minute session into two 7 minute sessions...

Which direction from St. Louis? I know of several HRC individuals in that area that are more then happy to help anyone with a retriever. Retriever Clubs

I do know there are also a few chessie people in that area.

I FF my little girl (first chessie). Has it paid off, don't know. I can't tell any difference in her vs my male chessie that I didn't FF. We will tell as she gets older and more pressure is applied.

As far as how much each day? I always gave it the pup a few hours rest before repeating. If it is not going well at all, I gave her a break until the next day.

The one thing I noticed about my chessie vs a lab, chessies are quick to catch on and they will not forget.

I was told a long time ago that if you present the dowl and the dog fetch's without pressure you need to find something they will not fetch. I moved to a small hammer with a little weight. Again, I never had to apply any great amount of pressure to get a response with my chessie, the lab yep. We live and learn on that one.

What I am saying is this, Evan's stuff is great I am using it with my current chessie. I have had to adjust some of the methods as chessies tend to learn a lot quicker then labs, but they also tend to try to find "better ways" of doing what I tell. The key is patience, wear them down by repeating over and over until they "give in". Prime example is water cheating drills. Chessies know that running the bank is a no no, but maybe this one time he won't care.
