Well, sure was hoping to report on a fine Chessie running in the FT. Well, not a single entry. Not one in Derby, Not one in Qual, not one in Am., Not one in the Open.

Watched some fine dogs work all day Saturday. My training partners Derby dog produced a switch in the third series Sunday.

Guy from Montana won the Open with a Yellow dog, Jimmy Gonia took Second and the MT Trainer took third. (Sorry, can't remember the guys' name) Can get my premium if anyone is interested..Paul

I forgot about that but, It wasn't aimed at you Norene...I thought we would get some folks up from California..Was hoping to get to see Petopea's and Hargers latest runners....I hear Petopea has a nice boy who is working well.

Only 28 dogs in Derby and about the same entry in Quals. not sure what the open started with but the second to last series was a water blind that plucked off a big chunk of the field. Only 9 call backs for the final series which was a doosey of a double.

Long retired gun(400yards) from pick nick area to the opposite mound near the swim by pond. live shot flier directly across the water to the right of the parking area about 150 yards. Memory bird line right by the old blind line which caused a lot of flaring to the right, dogs swimming down the pond long with a guilty conscience about getting to close to the blind or coming on land too early.

not a single dog took the line through water, over the road and back into the swim by pond water to the mound. All dogs ran around the swim by pond, hunted behind the retired gun before picking up the bird. 4 dogs completed the test.

The Am was in the field behind Lawrence Carlsons. A tight triple. First bird right, second bird middle long on the slough bank and go bird short left live shot flier/eraser almost in line with long gun. Gave a lot of dogs problems. Saw a lot of switching and just plain not remembering the long bird. dealers choice but, very few tried to pull the dogs off the go bird/live flier. Temptation to switch was very heavy on picking up the middle bird.

Dancer would have aced it.Smile

Yes, thinking this coming weekend....had a funeral last week, watched the FT then went to the PBR Bull Riding in Tacoma. Slept and watched BB Tourney all Sunday. Kaie worked well for me Sunday night. Moving fast on blinds and marking good.

May have a nice house lined up with a 2,000SF horse barn, large pasture and a large garage. Also in Fall City. Hoping this one works out. Would have a place to park all my toys inside.(Dog(s?) included..waiting for the other information to make a decision. Will keep ya posted as soon as I hear anything.

Give you a ring later in the week. Paul

Get a copy of the field trial schedule from Retriever News--or check the list on Entry Express. Trials in different areas are often set up opposite each other, and you can't expect someone to drive a long way when they've got one closer. That will give you a good idea of which ones are best to go to--but you can learn a lot from watching Labs run too, as well as picking the brains of folk in the gallery. Also, a lot of us don't like to run more than two or three trials in a row--the dogs get too hippy skippy for the control one needs in field trials. . . . Still, you have to face the fact that a lot of trials simply won't have any Chessie entries. I'll be judging Tacoma next year, and I'll be surprised if any Chessies show up--and not just because its me, there simply aren't many active trialers currently running in that area. . . .

I realize the folks in CA are working their way up here. Should be April 10ish? to get the bigger non-local entries..

Paul, in the Am the flier was out of order. Last bird down and retired was the bird on the right. The dog I handled did a very good job. He also had a nice land blind, but was dropped for line manners, and letting out a couple woofs, much to my surprise.

Tom, I've got a couple young ones. I'd be surprised if you don't see one or both when you judge Tacoma next year.

You know, I was off on that....now I think about it again, most on the go bird to the right hunted long around the tree line or went behind the gunner...watched a few break on the flier and never get to the last bird down on the tree line right....

I just missed you run, was walking back between open and am.

Yes, may possibly have a Derby dog for Tacoma next year....keeping fingers crossed.
