Hurricane's Express Courier got a JAM in the amateur at the Flat River Retriever Club on May 8. Owned and handled by John Ackerman. Three trials in 2005; 2 Jams. I'm ready for another color and need a point and a half to qualify for the National Amateur.

Good job John and Curry. I have the tally sheets for the club grounds if you want to train with ducks.

John,

Hope you qualify for the Nat. Am. Never saw "Curry" run, but sure sounds like a real nice dog. However, I do remember your "Crackle's Hello Sailor"*** from long ago (1987?) running in the Ft. Collins RC trial with all the same well known pros (Farmer,Eckett, Schrader, Baird) back then that are still here all summer. Plus a lot more!

Good luck.

Hi Kieth,

A few people still remember Sailor....

I have been very lucky to have had two "dogs-of-a-lifetime". The first was Sailor, the second is Curry. Sailor was a great natural marker that was poorly trained by me. Curry is also a great natural marker but I guess I have learned a few things in the intervening years.

Sailor was not a water dog. She didn't mind the water, but she cheated it if the land route to a bird was quicker. Curry is a water dog. If there is any water remotely in the area of a mark, he will get in it. As Charles Coleman used to say "he likes his pelt wet". That hurts me occasionally, but I would rather have that problem than its opposite and it leads to significantly better water blinds. I usually need to cast on to a point, but never have cast refusals into the water.

Anyway, thanks for remembering Sailor.

John,

If you get qualified, drop me a line. I can set you up with excellent pre-national training grounds, birds, and facilities for live birds. Terrain, water and vegetation are similar to the National grounds, which are about 1 1/2 hours away.

The same invitation goes for any other brown dogs that qualify, as well as selected black ones (like Desi from Chi-town and the dogs out east (Chili, Gerard's hounds, etc.)).
