1. Wind Save. Triple, Peake picks up two birds cleanly. Lines up for third bird, Handler sends dog and dog leaves line at a rapid pace. Dog winds bird [at rapid pace]. Dog picks bird up and returns to handler. Dog gets dropped. Handler asked why he was droped and was told because of a "Wind Save". True Story.
2. Quad. Handler lines Peake up and calls for the birds. Birds go down. Last bird is 20 yards across a ditch. Peake stands up and takes one step towards the downed bird and stops. One judge releases the dog to retrieve. Handler tells the dog to sit and heel. Handler releases the dog to retrieve. The dog picks up the bird and returns to line. The other judge excuses the handler and dog. Judge is asked why the dog was excused and was told the dog broke! True story! If you would like to add to the "Peaked" list go ahead. |

True story: Handler drives ten hours to run a derby dog (who has 7 derby points and needs only 3 more points to make the national derby list). In the first series the judges call back another dog that was handled to the mark. Rather than waiting to see if this dog would be in contention for a ribbon at the end of the trial, the handler brings this to the marshal's attention so the judges can be informed of their error in calling back a handle. The judges decide to let the handled dog continue.
After the second series, the derby dog with 7 points has hooked two guns and the handler assumes they will be dropped (or just able to win a green ribbon at best). To their surprise, they are called back to run the third series. They stay to run as their dog, rather than drive 10 hours home Sunday afternoon, as they know their dog is a good water dog. In the 3 series, at 6 PM Sunday night, their dog pinned the water marks (a down the shore water double). Their dog is dropped after the 3rd series, with no explanation other than the judges wanted to let everyone play until the end, and then it was getting to late to bring all the dogs back to the last series. Needless to say, it was a long 10 hour drive home Sunday night. Wendy |
