Kathy, I am glad your dog is doing good. Hate to hear stories like that. I also have a BLF that is with an excellent pro. He lives about an hour from us. It's amazing to watch how differently he trains than the chessie pro. The basics and concept are the same, but it's so different. You can use alot of force (I don't mean abuse) on a lad. With a chessie it seems to be more of a negotiating and balance process.

Greg, thanks. 2 months into Annie's training I found out my brother had been rushed to the hospital by his neighbor and was dying of cancer. I had to fly to Miami (I live in Northern California) to deal with that and all the stress and sorrow that went with it, and because of it and against my better judgement, I also had to leave Annie with the trainer until I got back to California. But I also discussed with the trainer the course of action she should have taken before I left Annie there any longer. Sadlly the trainer continued on her own path of dog destruction! Next time she does this though....she may not be so lucky as the next dog may very well bite and hurt her when he does it! My Anhie isn't like that....she just fell apart and couldn't understand why the woman was so horrific to her!

Hi Ya All !
Kathy your so right if the pro doesn't have
or want a Chessie then they don't deserve one !
Try to make a Chessie to submitt is exactly the wrong thing to do ! They don't submitt they
do the work because they like you .
I have use the same pro for 30 years , run open and gone 7 series in the Canadian Open National!
But he has trained Chessie's since he was 13 (he's 74 now)
and always hunts one . Buy the way most of his dogs are Labs . One of them was "High Tech" who won 2 Canadian Amt. Nationals and 1 Canadian Open National and is the father of Lean Mack .
All I'm trying to stay is a good pro can train them all even our special Chesapeake Bay Retrievers . So look hard for the good ones not just the big names !!

PS:His son is training my 9 month old pup rigth
now and "Deep" is doing just fine ! Tank You Very Much !

One last comment......

There is a correct way and a wrong way to use electronics. Some trainers think it is appropriate to double up a Tritronics XL 500 using one on the dogs neck and one around the waist.

If you ever see a trainer do this I suggest you pack your dog up and leave . Because the trainer obviously doesn't know how to properly use an e-collar.

Don't get burned like some people I know !

Chessie's are exactly like Mr. Pinder and the others have stated . They will go out of their way to please you . So the key is to teach the dog what exactly you want.

The reason most Pros use Labs is because they are the easiest to train.........period

You gotta love Chessies to run one !

I think you are going to do just fine .

What Crossfire Hurricane said you got to love chessies to run one. There is not much more I can say that has not been said here, my first Peake took me from Northern Ontario to S.Carolina doing the UKC/HRC he got his HRC. at Lake Ontario HRC. what I learned from him was at the end of that day he was just happy to lay at my feet when home with or without a ribbon. They work for you because they are part of your life.

Paul, sorry I couldn't respond earlier - 2 computers down and disrupted DSL. It sounds like all the bases were covered. Great advice posted. I would like to comment if possible, train yourself!! 1, chessies bond typically to one person and greater progress will be made if the chessie only had to answer to one person and 2, if field work or hunting is to be 100% consistent, you must train yourself. A chessie looks for approval on everything. Especially since they are so eager to please, if they feel hesitant as to what is expected of them, they will freeze or not perform to optimal levels. A trainer cannot possibly anticipate every obsticle or situation that may arise. When a chessie encounters unfamiliar situations, and the person whom "trained" him is not present, the chessie gets anxious and confused and does not know what to do since he wants to please and do what is expected. If you train and are present, any unfamiliar encounter will be overcome just by your presents - through encouragement and body language. The chessie feels its OK and I can please attitude easier if he knows he has to make you happy, not an absent trainer. He will show and hunt more securely and be more deliberate. Sorry for not offering advice earlier - got new laptop and am back online.
