Hi all - I am picking up a pup this weekend from a breeder. I just started to read a little more about DM in chesapeakes and it has me a little worried. The litter has FC-AFC Distagon MH (AKA "TIGER") in the pedigree, so my pup would have DM in the second generation of his pedigree. I guess my question is how easilty is it transferred on through breedings? Should this worry me, or is it such a small chanse of ending up with a pup with DM that I should not worry much. Besides that I have never been more excited in my life! Here are a few pics of him at just under eight weeks.

HI Blake....

If there is no DM known on the other side of his pedigree I would bet you are probably 'safe'....But you will be best of having him tested - thank goodness the test is now available!

Good to hear! Big Grin I watched some videos I found with chessies that had it and it made me sick just watching it. Much less thinking about my pup getting it later on in his life. The breeding is between Kidd and Minnie. I am pretty sure kidd doesn't have any know DM on his side. Only three more days until I pick him up!!

Oh boy - you are getting a Minnie pup! cool!!!

Minnie has thrown some really nice dogs...of course, I am biased...The boy in my avatar is her son (Blaze was the sire).....I wanted another of her pups, but timing wise, it just hasn't worked out.....

I don't think you will be dissapointed at all...

I was up at Gary's a few weeks ago and looked at the Minnie/Kidd litter. Gary was great, and all of the pups looked eager and ready to retrieve! A friend of mine picked out a puppy from the Sounder/Oden litter. I had a hard time not purchasing one of the Minnie/Kidd pups myself! My wife would have killed me! Of course I still went home and told her that I had put a deposit down. Kinda just wanted to "test the waters" so to speak Smile Maybe next year.

Good luck with your puppy. And as Juli said, at least now there is a test.

Hi Blake,

What a handsome guy! Wink You can't go wrong with a Minnie pup....like Juli, I have one as well, she is a littermate to her male, & she is in my avatar as well. Smile

Minnie has produced some very nice dogs and Gary does a great job of raising his litters, I know you won't be disapointed. Like has already been posted, at least now there is a test available for "DM".

Good Luck and enjoy your new puppy!!!

Blake,
DM does exist. There is a test for the presence of a gene. We do not know the mechanism of transmission of this gene or genes that may results in the disease.
I also have a grandson of Distagon as well as Distagon's full brother and wouldn't trade either of them.

Enjoy your puppy!

I have a daughter and granddaughter of Tiger. Like Tim, I wouldn't trade them for anything!
I wouldn't worry about the DM. We own Kidd's brother (Beamer) and 1 niece and 1 nephew.
Beamer had 27 Derby points so I think you are getting a good pup.
AND TIM....If you were going to trade Tanner, he can come here ANY time. Big Grin
