Billy there are still dogs that should've have been tested and they still haven't done anything. And they know better.

Mike,
I agree, but it is everyone's choice whether or not to test their dogs and, if they have been tested, whether to disclose that information publically. Can't force 'em - unlike retrievers. Claiare |

Is thier a pattern of where this is coming from?

Did I miss something? Is there now a test available to the public?
Again did I miss something? Is the limited amount of dogs that were voluntarily allowed to be tested for the EIC Research Study, enough to be able to accurately determine a pattern? Wouldn't that just be conjecture? Norene S. "Confidence is the feeling you have before you understand the situation"! |

I for one believe that it will be some time before a definitive answer can be had, regarding 'where' this is coming from....and frankly, does it really matter now that a test will soon be available?
It is interesting that the eic seems to be concentrated in one line...but interesting is ALL that it is - because as Norene states, there has simply has not been a lot of testing done...and until a whole lot more dogs are tested and the test is deemed 'trustworthy' enough for the John Q Public to use, then we can only use the information made available for personal reasons - to breed/not to breed basically....I'm not saying it isn't a trustworthy test right now..but that is why all these samples were part of a STUDY).... I hope that EIC can be kept from becoming the prevalent problem it has for the labs...And IMO that is what this test is for. It is so that we can keep our breed healthy... Juli |

Regarding the EIC testing, a public test is not available yet, but should be soon.
People that submitted their dog's results for the list did it on a voluntary basis, and I thank them for this. Many results were not released publicly by the owners, it is their choice that we should respect. I am sure that they will use the test information wisely for their breeding decisions. We are lucky that the EIC gene does not seem as widespread in our breed as it is in Labs, it will make it a lot easier to work around. We will be able to maintain our lines and in the short term produce unaffected dogs, and ultimately,in the long run, non-carrier dogs. Mario |

The Mystery Dog |
As with any "new" test, one should be cautious in interpreting the results. Often times, with a new test, there are what we call "early adoptors", people who are not afraid to try cutting-edge things. These people tend to have dogs that are all from the same bloodline. This leads to what is known as "sampling eror". What seems like a high percentage of affected dogs from one line is only the result of the fact that the majority of dogs tested were from that line to begin with. It's not that affected dogs don't occur in other bloodlines; rather, it is that no dogs from those bloodlines have been tested yet.
We have seen this all along with all breeds, from the time we first started doing hip x-rays through OFA until now. Once a large enough representative sample of the Chessie population is tested (won't happen until the test becomes commercially available), then the numbers will even out. Also, we cannot know the gene frequency until many, many dogs have been tested. Lisa |

Thank you Lisa.....
I agree with your insight on "new tests" and appreciate your posting it. Norene S. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Norene S., "Confidence is the feeling you have before you understand the situation"! |

My dog Java was a litter mate to Mario's Saga. She was also affected. She was VERY affected, only being able to retrieve for about 5 minutes before the symptoms would begin to show. After sending Mario the video of one of her episodes, he quickly made good on the dog and started his quest to find out more info on EIC. I think we should commend Mario for helping get the testing on its way because he could have easily swept it under the rug as some people would have.
