Turk & Barnum were two different dogs. Turk appears in an engraving in American Agriculturist or Harpers. Many of the early dogs had the same name-like Dan, etc etc. The only way to distinguish them is by owner & DOB. They were sometimes even called different names ! Some time when I am not busy (is that ever ?) I will get back to extending pedigrees on the Chessie Database on these early dogs.

Anyone have any history knowledge.

I was also thinking I had heard Turk’s name somewhere before. The ACC web site said “Duck” was a descendent of Turk reportedly a descendent of Canton. Duck was mentioned as being sent to the island, not bred there. Also according to the records in this book Turk’s parents were Jeannie and Dan. Dan was a stray. Jeannie was from Champ and Lady, Lady was from the pound. Maybe Champ was the connection to Canton?

Anyway just got me wondering, interesting food for thought. Maybe the ACC historians have their pencils sharpened and are working it out as I type. Smile

So is the painting of Barnum or Turk? If we knew the date of the painting that would solve it........ Not that it matters, just interesting.

Not one of the highlights of the book but a term used describing..."Juno was....one of the best. Dies at Wheatland from Dog-shore sickness." Anyone care to guess what "Dog-shore sickness" is in modern terms??

Shore sickness is motion sickness, the reverse of sea sickness.

Finally got a chance to sit down with my copy this weekend and was delighted. I too was amazed at the number of pups and dogs that were very short lived. The photos of the old dogs were WONDERFUL! I was interested in the very early deliniation of Chesapeakes as otter, curly coated, and straight coated types.

The kennel records describing different dogs as a"fine fighter" caused a smile of familiarity though it seemed like this proclivity was the demise of one Sire.

Time well spent.

This may be a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway ... where did the dogs live? Did they stay at the Club all the time, or did the members take them home with them? Did the Club have a kennel block, with someone taking care of them during the closed season?

Chances are they just ran loose around the club...
I don't know if kennels had been used at the time...
