Ha anyone had a dog that has had a reaction to the lepto vaccine? Teal got one yesterday and last night had a fever, the runs, and could not get up. (favoring his hind leg)

Doesn't look like Teal is going to make it. (he is still alive though) 9/23 a.m.

I hope i dont have two dead chessies in 18 mo.!! Both with weird diseases!! I can't take this anymore. I won't fork out the money any more!! 3 mo. of training and now...

Edited this cause Teal is still alive but it still doesnt look good if we dont find out whats up. Did not mean to mislead anyone. Just frustrated and kinda waiting and preparing for what i think may be inevitable.

What a horrible thing to have happen.
seems as if there must be a different plan in store for you. Certainly you have had a rough test in a short time.

Hoping that you will be able to have another canine companion to share good times with.

I hope that you knowing there are some people out there contemplating your pain can help just a tiny bit. It all sounds just awful. I had a major scare with a youngster of mine a few months ago and spent some time bawling on the kitchen floor.

Nothing I can say can make your shit change, but we are all letting you know you aren't totally alone with it. I'm very sad for you and your dogs.

how tramatic..loss for words, made me tear up. I know when I lost Gauge, posting on this forum was helpfull. Knowing how fragile life can be with our best hunting pals. I'll give my Chessy boys a extra hug today for Teal. When you loose a pup or dog it's best to be thankful for the time you had to share with them. They will both be waiting for you when your time comes.

Teal made it through the night. Vet has no idea what is going on! He is very weak and has lost a lot of weight. He did get up on his own. They are being more positive than i am but i have just had so much bad luck with my chessies that its hard for me to stay up beat.

I called my trainer to see if there was an outbreak of anything up there cause some of the problem teal went in for was conjuntivitis. This is one of the first syptoms of Leptospirosis. The trainer was putting ointment on his eyes but then i found out he never got a vet involved. Lepto can start out in the eyes that way and then take weeks later show many other symptoms. I guess the reason why the vet doesnt know exactly whats up is because the lepto tests takes ten days to get back. Any way, the trainer still has not gotten back to me on this issue even after i told him there is an emergency situation. If i can identify any kind of outbreak of lepto up there and find out what strain it is it could help IF this is what Teal has. I guess its easy to say i am disappointed as best that they won't return my call after spending over two grand to have him up there. The other thing is that this is one of there pups!!! For any one interested i will keep ya posted and thanks for the encouragment!

Thanks Juli, We are not even close to being out of the woods here and i do not have a positive outlook on the situation. Its a situation that in some point in time, If he does not show improvement and no positive diagnosis i will have to make a decision on seeing this dog suffer or not. I sure did not mean to mislead any one here! like i said to me it doesn't look go though.

John,

I deleted my previous post as well. Like some others I too misunderstood what you wrote.

Know that we are thinking positive thoughts for your Teal....in hopes that he has a full recovery.

Take Care,

John,
I was recently hospitalized for what my doctors suspected was lepto. It turned out to be Lyme. But, I learned a great deal about Lepto in the process. You or your dogs can be exposed to the bacteria if you frequent any waterways, marshes, or moist areas where small mammals and rodents may have urinated. That's all it takes. The average Chesapeake is exposed to that on a regular basis.

The treatment is a course of doxycycline (works for both lepto and lyme). Is Teal on doxy or a similar antibiotic? With Lepto, it is critical that the doxy start as soon as possible. It takes several weeks for the body to develop antibodies to lepto that will show up on the antibody test, so they won't necessarily pick it up on a test right away, but you should begin treatment.

I'm sending good thoughts your way!

At a loss for words!! Teal is home, all tests for EVERYTHING were negative! Teal is now running around the yard like NOTHING EVER HAPPENED!!!!!! This is like a weird dream. The vets still don't know what was up with him. When they got in this morning he was up, alert so they took him for a walk or should i say he took them for a walk!!

When i took him in he looked like he was not going to make it!! Has anyone ever experience this not just with a chessie but with any dog?

Thanks for the support

John
