I was talking to a friend yesterday discussing a couple of well known Colorado field trial trainers from Wellington and he mentioned what a great summer Cherylon Loveland was having with a number of dogs trained at her kennel. It made me smile knowing how hard she has worked at her craft over the years starting with Duncan Labradors in the 1970’s with her ex husband Jack Loveland. She then started “Hunt-Field Retrievers” in 1985 with 3 Labs in her kennel as a single mom. She has come a very long way.
She is a published author with Claire Rutherford in 1988 with the well recognized “RETRIEVER PUPPY TRAINING The Right Start Start For Hunting.” She has been a “stay at home” trainer from the beginning, training retrievers and their owners primarily to compete in retriever field trials. In recent years, her clients have consistently competed at the Nationals. Here are a few comments taken from a couple of threads today on RTF after the Ft. Collins and Centennial Club trials this summer in CO. “Ted Shih member.php?u=22551&member.php?u=22551 Join Date: Jan 2003 Location: Golden, Colorado Posts: 2,036 I want to put in a plug for Cherylon Loveland, who does not run Field Trials, but works her butt off six days a week, so that her clients can run the dogs and be competitive Since the National Amateur, in three field trials, my dogs have done the following Mootsie has Open 3rd, Open 4th, Amateur 1st, Amateur 4th Mozzie has finished 3 Opens, Open 4th, Open RJ, Open Jam, Amateur Win Buffy - who is finally healthy after a series of set backs - Amateur 2nd Nelson - Qualifying 1st, Amateur 4th John Goettl took first in the Amateur at Colorado Women's with Ozzie, John got a fourth in the Derby with Bee, a young dog owned by Mark Menzie Ed Aycock's young derby dog, Holland, has placed in 3 derbies and finished in the only other one he has run. Ray Duncan's young qualifying dog, Nitro, has finished two out of three qualifyings That wide range of success is due in large part to the long hours, and creative work of Cherylon Loveland. Until you have seen the woman at work, you have no idea what hard work is She is working the young dogs at 5:30 in the morning doing the basics while it is cool, then out in the field by 9-10, doing drill work, then setups by 11, closing out around 6. My dogs are running hot ... and the credit belongs to Cherylon __________________ 8-03-2009, 03:42 PM #41 “EdA member.php?u=22902&member.php?u=22902 Join Date: May 2003 Location: Texico Posts: 2,604 Quote: Originally Posted by Ted Shih showthread.php?p=479819 - post479819showthread.php?p=479819 - post479819 and the credit belongs to Cherylon Ditto to that, there is no harder working nor more dedicated professional retriever trainer. She has never had the opportunity to keep a group of all-age dogs before, they usually go home to their owners or to other pros. In addition to the aforementioned, Sylvia McClure's Gracie (Hilltop's High Society) will be heard from as well as Holland's littermate Tubby (I hope). Way to go Cherylon, you're THE BEST!!!!!! I do, however, remember an article printed in the Ft. Collins “Coloradoan” when a client (Max Morton) at the time qualified his male Lab “Zin” for the ’87 National Amateur held in Steamboat Springs, CO. Her first, but far from the last National contestant. A big congratulations to Colorado’s born and raised, Cherylon Loveland, a retriever field trainer who does not run field trials, but trains for them. Much like Rex Carr, who influenced her greatly. __________________ Keith Delmarva's Maggie Mae*** (Maggie) Crossfire's LC Smith** (Sunny) Bur Oak's Neutron Meg*** (Meg) Delmarva's Good Feelin To Know (Rusty) Westwind's Lucky 7 (Mickey) Grand Mesa's Sweet Melissa (Missy) Grand Mesa's Mr. Blue (Blue) Westwind's Stingray (Cruiser) |

Hey Keith, do you get a commission on new clients you drum up for her? Just kidding, of course. I have long known of your admiration for Cherylon.

Tom,
You have been around long enough to know how tough the field trial game can be at the All Age level and the commitment that is necessary to be competitive. What is impressive, is the number of field titled, national qualifiers and QAA dogs (and only a few were mentioned in the original post) that have come out of Cherylon's kennel handled by her clients in the past 10 years. And then you have Kenny Trott right across the county road with his string of All Age Labs! Very competitive group. I read on RTF a few weeks ago that Ted Shih has 3 dogs qualified for the 2010 Nat. Amateur and pretty sure John Goettl has one too. He also has been placing his young dog in the All Age Stakes.
John has been in field trials since the early 60's and has had many a titled Lab. He is a retired CO. Division of Wildlife fisheries biologist and has worked on the Retriever Advisory Committee in recent years. He is an avid duck hunter and longtime member of the Ft. Collins RC. I was lucky enough to throw hundreds of birds for several of his dogs (AFC Cache La Pourde Snort, Blackguard' Thunderstorm*** and others) for a few years in the 1980's while we trained with Bill and Jackie Lauenroth in Ft. Collins. Very, very knowledgeable guy who has done a lot for many in the retriever field trial game. Congratulations! Well I have to put in a few good words for Ted. I have found him to be a real nice guy who's cell phone is always available for questions.

Ted has had tremendous success since returning to field trials the past ten years and starting with titled littermates "Ace" and "Zowie" and I think Cherylon owned the sire involved in that breeding which goes back to "Cody" with DeWitt Boice's FC/AFC "Woody" from long ago.
Ken Erickson and Ted both were very influential with the Platte River RC back in the 80's when Ken still lived here and they both were into the hunt test scene. I remember when Ted first started showing up at Cherylon's in the late 80's with one of his first black Labs. Those two guys have owned some great dogs both Peakes and Labs.
