About a month ago a small patch of hair about 4" from the tail of my CBR turned white. About a week later it then turned a very light yellow/brown. Then it fell out. He now has a bald spot on his tail about 2" long. It is dry to the touch. It isn't sensitive to the touch. it is not hot, etc. The dog doesn't scratch it, lick it or otherwise pay attention to it. Any suggestions?

How old is your dog, sex, and where is the bald spot? Sounds like "stud tail" to me. Which males and some females will get because of the oil glands in the tail.

If other bald spots arrive or this one changes anyway a trip to the vet would be in order.

JoAnn;

Deuce is a 7 month male. The area is about 4" from the base of the tail. It is a patch about 2" long and 1" wide. The rest fo his coat is not very thick but I attribute this to his age.

It sounds like where the scent gland was in the tail of the wild dogs, and this often happens in chesapeakes. don't know why, and some people treat the spot with the invermectin paste/horse wormer and it grows the hair back. Never tried this though because I've never had this problem with my dogs.

Richard, Wondering if it is enviromental? Reasonng, Chelsea also developed a bald spot, but hers is on the base of the tail extending 2" down the tail and several dogs in neighborhood & town are getting the same symptoms. Remember I am close by and the mountain I'm on is right above you. Are other dogs in your area affected too? Just a thought. Duece might benefit from lotion appled (helps with the dryness). Keep me posted on Duece. By the way, today's the 3rd aniversary of Chelsea (we rescued her 7/30/05) and don't know her DOB, so we celebrate "adoption day".

YOJOJO has hit the nail on the head. I have two males who have this bald spot at the base. The older they get the less noticable it is. But it does remain.

Dr I don't think so!!

Sounds like I posted earlier, stud tail. If it isn't itchie and he isn't chewing at it let it be.

The rest of his hair coat will come in after he blows is puppy coat. Good luck with your pup and have fun with him.

Huh that's interesting.... My pup got a similar spot. It's not Bald but it's VERY thin and about the size of a half dollar... It's really not growing back too well either. He's got such thin hair anyhow, it makes him look funny so i don't take him around other people much latly

Hunt-chessies...Huh..me too...his coat is not that thick anyway. Hoping it's just because he is still a puppy. Spot is about the same size and same location. There are a few hairs in the spot. Every time we go out people want to know what's wrong with his tail. Someone suggested I mix up Gold Bond medicated powder and Listerine. Ever heard of that?...PS: CVN 65 The Big E...
