I have had previous versions of TBS (The Breeder's Standard). Plus points have always been quick pedigree entry using "Pedfast", and the computation of Wright's Co-efficient of Inbreeding. There is also a handy tool for trait analysis.
-What I didn't like were ugly pedigrees (Nothing beats the MS Access based RollCall for pedigrees), and I found TBS to have inferior forms for HT and FT games. In version 2003 TBS has a FT/HT entry form that is usable. I also appreciate the "DataMaster" option that allowed me to go back and put all registered names, colors, and call-names in Capitals, with just one mouse click. TBS2003 is a powerful tool. Used conscientously, it could go a long way toward improving the breed. The problem is not having a standard database already in existence. I've created my own database that is based off AKC, OFA, CERF, and RollCall2000. You have to enter everything in yourself. There used to be databases that had been put together by a user, but it was not complete, and subject (like everything else) to human error. In conclusion here is what I like about TBS2003: 1) Tracking expenses for my kennel 2) Tracking vaccinations, and Vet Visits 3) The training log feature. 4) Crystal Ball analyzer. You can run the genetic contribution by ancestor up to 10 generations using the Wright's COI. You can also produce a "trait analysis" report(provided you manually enter the traits for each dog), or print a "Hypothetical Mating" pedigree. My last version of TBS was 2001. I had a number of duplicate non-linked entries that were corrected with the 2003 version. With DataMaster I was able to change dog names to all capitals in a mouse stroke. Before that I had to re-type the names the way I wanted them. (A daunting task with just one 10 generation pedigree.) I still think the HT/FT entries and 5 generation pedigrees from RollCall 2000 are superior, but good luck getting a copy if you don't already have one. TBS2003 is available from Man's Best Friend PB |

Paul,
As Lisa V L can testity, I have spent significant time calculating inbreeding coefficients on dogs, and any reasonable product that would include that and pedigree information has real potential in my book! Thanks for the info, Claire |

No thanks! -I've seen the formula...
If you were paying yourself for labor, you would save money quickly by getting this program! Here is a link to an actual report I ran on one of my dogs. You can save the reports as MS Excel files and from there export to html for the web. Shuginator Report PB |

Poor Claire! She was doing some for me to validate my TBS 2000 IC. Calculations. TBS 2000 was consistent with what both Clair and I had calculated by hand for several dogs (and yes, there are still Profs who INSIST on having you do these by hand, at least once, so you "understand" it!)
Paul, how do the pedigrees look with the 2003 version? I agree, the pedigrees are the weakest part of the program, but then I rarely print pedigrees, anyway! Lisa |

By RollCall 2000 standards. MBFS recently put out a new pedigree program that works with TBS2003 called "Pedcasso". I was going to get that, but opted for "NetiGree" instead.
The drawback to "Megaped" and "Pedcasso" is that you in order to save it for a website you have to convert it to a graphics format, like a .gif, or jpeg. Also as the length of the dog's name increases with titles, the font get's smaller. It just doesn't look right. Titles only come in one color. I like the way RollCall attaches color significance to the TYPE of title. With Duals in Red, and FC or AFC's in Blue, CH's in purple, and bold for WD's, HT titles, and **, ***. Plus the color coding for OFA and CERF. Another RollCall bonus is the ability to export it to rich text format (Word), or HTML. I can do so much more with those formats. I can turn the rich text into Adobe PDF files, or HTML. Much nicer for the web. HTML shows nice, and the Adobe PDF will print a perfect 5 generation pedigree with OFA and CERF. "Netigree" is not bad. You can put up to 12 fields for dog info. So you see a dog in the pedigree, click on it's name and get OFA, CERF, PRA info, age, or even a picture of the dog. It was still worth $30 for me to upgrade my old version of TBS. PB |
